More Info
Dr. Marfo initiated knowledge
dissemination activities in Africa and other parts of the Majority World in the
1980s and 1990s. His work resulted in the distribution of three of his co-edited reference works on childhood disabilities to universities and
ministries of education, health, and social welfare in 55 nations at no
cost to recipients. Since 2001, Dr. Marfo has been a member of the
international faculty of the Early Childhood Development Virtual University
(ECDVU) based at the University of Victoria, Canada. The ECDVU's leadership
development program for Africa has already prepared over 50 Early Childhood Development (ECD)
leaders for twelve African countries through a distance education platform
that has enabled these leaders to receive Master's degrees and post-graduate
certificates without leaving the continent. In 2004, Dr. Marfo co-edited, with
his colleague and ECDVU Founding Director Dr. Alan Pence, a special issue of the
International Journal of Educational Policy, Research and Practice focusing on
Capacity Building for Early Childhood Development in Africa. The special issue
featured the research of the first cohort of Master's level ECDVU graduates. Dr.
Marfo is currently working with scholarly colleagues in Canada, Cameroon, Mexico, South
Africa, the United States, and Zambia to develop a networking and
capacity-building initiative aimed at strengthening Africa's contributions to
the global knowledge base on child development. A paper setting the tone for
this new initiative has just been published in the Spring 2008 issue of the
International Journal of Psychology (Vol. 43, No. 2: A. Pence & K. Marfo, Early Childhood
Development in Africa: Interrogating Constraints of Prevailing Knowledge
Bases).
